5B Classroom News: Week of April 20th

A note from Mrs. Burke:
The students have adjusted well to their new weekly assignment schedule.  The feedback they have given me about the new schedule has been overwhelmingly positive. They like the flexibility of completing the assignments at their own pace throughout the week.  All assignments are due by noon on Friday.  The expectation for 5th grade is that students will spend a total of about 90 minutes a day working on ELA, math, and related arts assignments. They are also expected to read for 20 - 30 each day as well as write one journal entry a day with at least 3 sentences.  If students are in the band they are also expected to practice their instrument for 20 minutes a day.  In summary, 5th graders have about 2 hours of school work a day, unless they are in band, then they have an additional 20 minutes. Students also have the option of doing enrichment work each week, after they have completed their weekly assignments, which is provided on the last slide of the ELA and math weekly presentations.  They can also practice their Spanish anytime using assignments that can be found in our Google Classroom.

Our weekly challenge this week was sparked by a volunteer from the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Center, located in White River Junction, who reached out asking for artwork from OQS students to distribute to their patients.  Due to the virus, people in their care can no longer have visitors and they are looking for ways to bring joy to their patients. I challenged the students to create a colorful picture, card, or poem (or anything else they could think of) that would bring someone joy. Keep reading to see the amazing things they created. I am so proud of them! They are such a thoughtful group!

Many thanks, parents, for your continued support. I couldn't do it without you!
