5B Classroom News: Week of April 22nd

A note from Mrs. Burke:
I hope everyone had a restful April break. This week students have been practicing for the upcoming SBAC tests for language arts. They have been learning about the format of the tests as well as the tools they will be able to use. Next week they will be testing on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and brings a healthy snack to school.

It's hard to believe there are only 6 weeks left of school. Tomorrow I will be sending home a paper that lists all of our end of year events for 5th grade (field trips and graduation). I will also email a copy to you so you have an electronic version. When you get the paper of end-of-year events you will see we are looking for chaperones for our last field trip of the school year so please be sure to email me if you are interested.

Please take a look at what our classroom reporters wrote about this week:

Which human rights have been threatened in the chapters about almonds or plums in the book Esperanza Rising? What has been happening in the story to show how these human rights have been threatened?

Some of the human rights, like numbers 23 which is “workers rights,” have been broken and some more. They're now thinking about having a strike because number 23 has been broken.

-Cash

In the chapter “Almonds,” on page 134 human right number 23 was threatened, “Worker’s rights.” I know this because it says in Esperanza Rising, “They only get 7 cents a pound for picking cotton. They want ten cents a pound.” But they don’t so it is not fair.
-Madison

The human rights threatened in Esperanza Rising are workers rights # 23 in almonds because their was a threat for a strike to stop working and get higher money and better housing.
-Lyndsey

One of the Human Rights that was threatened in the chapters Almonds and Plums, is article 13, the right to move. The people who were threatened were everyone working at the plantation they are working at. They are not allowed to move out of the camp once they're there.
-Abigail

The  human rights that have been threatened was right to not torture. Number 5 it says, "Nobody has the right to hurt us or torture us." What has been happening in the story to show how these human rights have been threatened was by a girl yelling and hurting a cat for an example of the workers.
-Jayden

One human right that has been threatened in the chapters about almonds and plums is the right to work.  One thing that has happened is Marta, her Mom, and her friends want better homes and more money and if they don’t get it they will quit.
-Maximus

In Esperanza Rising in the chapter about almonds, Marta was not being so nice. Everyone should have the right to do what they want and not have to listen to someone other than themselves!
-Nevaeh

In the chapter almonds, human right 23#, Workers rights, was threatened because they want ten cents for cotton. They need more money so they can pay for their kids food and feed their family. 1the Chapter plums, human right 25#, food and shelter, Juan and others didn't get shelter.
-Jack

In the chapter LasCabell it was a fun chapter. They went to camp and there was not so good of a home. Esperanza had no privacy. The human right says everyone has a right to have food and shelter and water and the camp is not following the human rights.
-Randy

Human Right 19 and page 123 was threatened because this quote shows, “This is what we are!” she yelled. “Small meek animals.” And this is how they treat us because we don’t speak up!”
-Madelyn

Multiple human rights have been threatened in Las Almendras and Las Ciruelas. Here are some human rights that were threatened in Las Almendras. On page 133, human right #5, no torture was threatened. I know that this human right was threatened, because Marta was hurting a kitten by throwing it in the field. The kitten was symbolizing one of the people who lived at the camp and how they were being treated. And on page 134, human right #23 workers rights, was threatened because the growers haven’t been giving the cotton pickers fair wages. There are still many more human rights that will be threatened in the book, but so far, this is all I know.
-Flynn

One human right that has been threatened in chapters almonds and plums is: Human right #5 No torture. Marta and her supporters had a cat and threw it into the cotton field. ¨ Nobody has any right to hurt us or to torture us.¨ Marta was holding the cat because they are basically being treated like the cat, not have the chance to feed their family or make the money they need to feed their family.
-Owen

In Esperanza Rising, Esperanza leaves her rich life behind to start fresh without Papa, Abuelita, and her best friend. Having to leave her perfect life behind for her careless uncles, who want her family’s power, she’s deeply scarred having Papa’s death caused by his own brothers. Stuck in a camp, Esperanza now works in the conditions through misery. In chapter “Las Almendras” (Almonds), Marta, a girl standing to strike, starts a riot of angry people trying to avoid the strike. She holds a kitten by the neck, showing the crowd how they are treated at the camp. People disagree, and just want the money for food and shelter for their families. Marta’s announcement of this strike, leads hundreds of people to join this argument. This threatens number 23 “Workers Rights,” causing possible losses of jobs for others, and them to work harder for the money. And just to feed their families. This also threatens number 20 “The Right to Public Assembly.” As they forcefully share this with the angry crowd.
-Braelyn

In the plum chapter human right # 5, no torture, has been threatened. Someone was holding a cat by the back of the neck and saying this is what we are which means the land owners think they are being treated like small meek animals.
- Zachary

In Esperanza Rising a right is #2 don't discriminate when she dropped a cat in the field to show that the kitten was getting tortured because that is how they feel getting tortured.
-Taylor

In the chapter almonds in Esperanza Rising a human right that has been threatened is Article #23. It was threatened on page 135 when it says “...the big farms will simply hire others.” This quote shows that they were just trying to ask for higher pay and they got fired. That isn't the best reason to fire some people, especially the whole camp, then everyone would have to leave the camp which isn't fair to anyone which means the whole camp would be threatened.

5B Classroom News: Week of April 1st

A note from Mrs. Burke:
We found out this week how much we depend on technology in our classroom. The internet was down on Wednesday, and part of Thursday, which made it impossible to do lessons on our computers. We had to resort to paper and pencil lessons. It makes me realize how fortunate our students are to have so much technology available to them, and how thankful I was to have a back up plan in place for when technology is not available.

Students have been taking practice tests this week to become more familiar with the style of questions and tools that are available for the upcoming SBAC tests. A letter was sent home with students on Wednesday letting you know the dates of the tests. I also emailed the text of the testing letter to you on Wednesday, as well as an email update on Friday letting you know the testing for the upcoming week has been changed to Wednesday and Thursday.

There will not be a blog post next week. Please keep reading to see what our classroom reports wrote about this week:

-Madylyn

During buddy snack this week, I have played Mancala, and read!
-Flynn

This week during buddy snack I played Mancala and Battleship with Taylor, Aubree, and Braelyn. For me, I dislike buddy snack because you can only talk to your buddy, not anyone else.
-Owen

This Buddy Snack was actually pretty fun and entertaining. Owen, Taylor and I were playing a game called BattleShip. I did the job of watching who cheated and who didn’t. There were some awesome cheats thrown in there, though. Mr. Mike helped Owen when he was trying to cheat by stacking his ships on top of one another. So I let them pull the small trick by him taking the ships off the board, and acting like they were on the board! It was pretty funny when Taylor couldn’t find where his ships were, until he peeked over to check what Owen’s board looked like. They both pulled a few tricks, until the end of snack, which nobody won. It was pretty fun. We were the only group of three.
-Braelyn

What I do during buddy snack is play games like Connect Four, Battleship and Mancala.
-Zachary

I like buddy snack because it is not as bunched up in one space and not as loud so Mrs. Burke is not telling us we are too loud.
-Taylor

I played Battleship and talked with my partners.

Which human rights have been threatened in the book Esperanza Rising so far? What has been happening in the story to show how these human rights have been threatened?

So far, a lot of human rights have been threatened: #16, marriage and family, because of Tio Luis’ forced marriage, #17, the right to own things, when Tio Luis was taking over Papa’s desk and wearing his belt buckle, and #13, when they are trying to leave Mexico. There are still many more human rights and places where the human rights have been threatened, but I was just using these as an example.
-Flynn

A few rights have been threatened, but the one that I remember is #16 marriage and family. Tio Luis threatened to burn the servant's house down if Mama didn't marry him.
