5B Classroom News: Week of March 11th

A note from Mrs. Burke:
The Iditarod has continued to be an exciting topic in our classroom. Student have been tracking mushers on their Fantasy Iditarod Team, waiting to see when their mushers will cross the finish line. They also presented information about their team to the second graders at OQS because they have also been learning about the Iditarod. It turns out many of the students have siblings who are in the second grade, so be sure to scroll down to see some adorable pictures. The 5th grade band went on a field trip this week to play at the high school with the 5th grade bands from the other two elementary schools. They sounded amazing with all 75 students playing together! The student who are not in band enjoyed a morning filled with lots of fun and exciting activities that included snowshoeing and robotics!

There will not be a blog post next week due parent/teachers conferences and the shorter school week. I'm looking forward to meeting with those of you who signed up for a conference.

Keep reading to see what our classroom reporters wrote about this week.

Using the information you’ve researched for your musher data disk, share some things you have learned about your musher.

How is your fantasy Iditarod team doing in the race?

What did you tell the 2nd graders about your fantasy Iditarod team when they came to visit on Monday?

I learned that Nicolas Petit is 38. I also learned that last year he was going to win but went off track and Joar passed him and then Nicolas came in 2nd place. Our fantasy team is winning so far. We got some points from Nicolas Petit and Joar. I told the 2nd graders the story of last year how Nicolas went off track we also told them how Lance Mackey survived throat cancer. Also Nicolas Petit dropped out of the race.Hhe did because his dogs were fighting so he raised his voice and usually he doesn't do that so they got mad and spooked so they didn't go when he said go so he had no other option than to scratch him out.

-Madylyn

My favorite part of our 5th Grade Band Day Field Trip was meeting other flute players. I much prefer being with 6 or 7 flutists than 1 other one!
-Flynn

The best part of 5th grade band day was playing all of the songs and listening to the songs like The Incredibles and Judge No Man and it was best time in the world.
-Owen

The 5th Grade Band Day was pretty fun. I am one of those people who don’t easily enjoy meeting new people. So I mostly stuck around my friends. However, all OQS students got separated during band practice. Surprisingly, I managed! And it wasn’t as bad as I thought! I met some people from White River. People got to meet up with old friends, and we all met some awesome High Schoolers. Over all, I had a fun day! I hope this message gets out to future 5th graders. It was something we don’t get to do on an everyday basis. So, I’m glad I got to go!
-Braelyn

My favorite part was The Incredibles theme song.
-Zachary

I loved it. it was so much fun. I met new people there. I did not sit with some one I already know and I liked it.
-Taylor

My favorite part about band day was seeing everyone that could be in the next year band and school as me. I also like Mr. Connerdy’s humor, he was making jokes and being funny.
