5B Classroom News: Week of Sept. 8th

A note from Mrs. Burke:  Hello 5B families. We are off to a great start in 5B!  This is a unique start to the school year and the students have been well behaved, as well as very excited to see each other.  It has been wonderful to finally see them in person!  They spent their first week learning many new protocols that have been put in place to keep everyone safe while in school, and they have spent time participating in many fun "getting to know you" activities. The students have been very patient and helpful as we have maneuvered our way around this new way of going to school. They have done an outstanding job keeping their masks on and have enjoyed time in our indoor and outdoor classrooms.  Please click here to read the expectations they wrote as a group to help us to Practice Safety, Act Responsibly, Work to Learn, and Show Respect (PAWS) in our classroom.  I couldn't have asked for a better start to the school year!

If you haven't returned the paperwork from the packet that was sent home with your child on the first day of school, please do so as soon as possible.  I can't post pictures of students on the blog until I have all of the media releases returned, so for now I will share photos to give you an idea of our learning spaces. Thank you for sharing your kind and thoughtful students with me!

Here is a peek at our classroom where students are safely spread out.

I read this book to students on the first day of school to talk about things they were "carrying" into the classroom with them, with a focus on emotions.  They ranged from fears about the virus to excitement to see each other. It was a great place to start building our classroom community of learners.

Here is one of our beautiful outdoor classrooms that is near the school.  Each student has a tree stump seat to sit on; socially distanced of course.

We are so fortunate to have a second outdoor classroom that is located a bit further into the woods,  Notice our comfy chairs! Our next task is to bring out the safety snakes the students made this week to space the chairs at least 3 feet apart.  They had a great time decorating their safety snakes and I hope to share pictures of them with you in the next blog post.
