5B Classroom Blog: Week of March 9th

A note from Mrs. Burke:
Last week the students started tracking their mushers for their fantasy Iditarod teams. Every morning they come into the classroom eager to see where their mushers are on the Iditarod trail. Along with tracking their fantasy team, they are each researching, and closely tracking, one of the mushers on their team. As their musher progresses on the Iditarod trail, they get to move a sled dog with their musher's name on it along our bulletin board which shows the trail. They are also trying to keep up with their musher during our Idita-Read challenge. For every minute they read, they get to move a dog sled, with their name on it, along our Iditarod bulletin board. I wonder if they will arrive in Nome before their musher?

On Friday, the 5th grade went on a field trip to the high school. The students who are in band participated in workshops with the district's music department staff. The students who are not in band had a chance to visit the Hartford Area Career & Technology Center (HCATC) and work with students in the STEM program. It was a fun day for all!

Finally, here is a picture I found from I Love to Read Week that I never posted:
Reading is cool, wear your shades to school!

Please keep reading to see what our student reporters posted this week.

If you play in the band:   5th Grade Band Day
What is something new you learned about playing your instrument during 5th Grade Band Day?  What was your favorite thing about 5th Grade Band Day? Why?

Today at 5th Grade Band Day I was allowed to try out several new percussion instruments. I played the Timpani drum, the Marimba, the Vibraphone and the Gong.  Trying a new instrument that I had never even heard about was very interesting.
-Aaron

I learned that instead of holding out a note, I could just repeatedly tap the note. My favorite thing about band day was snack because I could eat, see my sister, and I didn't have to stand.
-Andre

What I learned about playing my instrument was that we need to blend together and keep together. My favorite thing was when we all blended our sounds was the best.
-Ben

During band day I learned that embouchure is very important when playing a band instrument. My favorite part of band day was splitting into sections because we got section specific information.
-Cody

Something I learned about playing my instrument during band day was that when you are playing your sax., your tongue should not be under your reed, it should be just barely touching the tip of it.  Mr. C says, “tip of the tongue, to the tip of the reed!” My favorite part of band day was when we were playing “Power Rock because we were all playing together, and it sounded very cool.
-Colin

Something I learned was how to keep my breathing in control. My favorite thing about 5th Grade Band Day was the choir because I like hearing people sing.
-Emmariah

My favorite part would be playing power rock and I learned that when you do mouth exercises it helps you a lot in band.
-Kayd

I learned to keep the mallets low so you can hit the tetes right. My favorite part was when we played power rock. Why I liked everything was because I could meet new people and see friends.
-Liam

I learned how to blend better with others. I loved playing with others because I like seeing how and what my friends play.
-Max

Something new I learned about playing my instrument during 5th Grade Band Day was use your wrist and fingers not your elbows.

If you are not in band:  STEM at the Hartford Area Career & Technology Center (HCATC)
How is STEM at the HACTC similar and/or different than STEAM at OQS?
What was your favorite thing about visiting the STEM program at the HACTC?  Why?

STEM at HACTC is different than in STEAM here at OQS because they are high schoolers so it's more advanced. My favorite thing to do in STEM was building the roller coaster. It was called the Hair Flipper. Me and my partner Jacob made the winning roller coaster. We put it on the side on a table so it could pick up speed as it went down. Then there was a small loop. Next you went on a small hill. At the end there was some tape so it could slow down.
-Charleigh

It is different than OQS because they use saws and they build stuff to help people out. My favorite part about the visit was all of it because it is all super fun to do. The projects we did were to get the ball in a bucket only using meter sticks, get across the hallway using foam pads, and build a roller with a hump, upside down loop and need to end a least 4 inches away and not have a sudden stop.
-Peyton

STEM at HACTC has a little in common. It is similar. They all do engineering and science,
fixing things, building things, doing research on many different things and most of all they
have FUN will doing  STEAM or STEM.
