Now that the cold weather has arrived, please make sure your child is bringing appropriate cold weather gear to stay warm during recess such as a hat, mittens or gloves, snow pants, and winter boots. It would also be helpful if they could bring a large bag to store these items in so they can easily find them in the cubby area when needed.
This year the Ottauquechee School is collecting donations of canned fruit cocktail or mixed fruit for the Hartford-Norwich Holiday Basket Helpers. If you would like to make a donation, please send it in with your child and I will make sure it gets to a donation box in our school.
Due to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday break there will not be a blog post next week. I wish you and your family a happy and restful Thanksgiving.

Language Arts: The American Revolution
What has been happening in the book Divided Loyalties?
In Divided Loyalties, the Barton family of five has been separating due to beliefs. Mary and Robert believe in the British and it’s protection. William, Abigail, and Ben, the children, believe in the Patriot Cause. Now that the parents know, they are disappointed, scared and shocked. They are scared because they are afraid William will get hurt in battle. They only know about William being a Patriot.

In ELA we are having our mid-unit 2 assessment. In Divided Loyalties it is talking more about William and how the parents feel about him going to the Sons of Liberty meetings and him being a soldier for the Patriots.

Social Studies: Colonial America: Researching Colonial Trades
What did you learn this week about some of the colonial trades you researched?
This week some things I learned from researching is that the Blacksmith made
tools and kitchenware. Also the Apothecary is a druggist and did surgery,
trained apprentices, and prescribed medicine.

The things I like doing about the trade is that we get to sort of choose who we are. We get to research on all the jobs and learn three facts on each of the job options.

This week in Social Studies I learned that a founder made molds to make things like spoons, guns, swords, etc. out of metal.

What I have learned that some of the trades are the same as current jobs,
but called a different name.

This week I learned that the shoemakers have this special knife to scrape the rubber of the side of the shoe.

I learned is hatter went mad (Mad As A Hatter) from mercury (stuff used to make hats).

What I learned this week about some of the colonial trades I researched was that there are many different types of looms. Looms are what weavers use to weave whatever they are making. I also learned that milliners replaced decorations on clothes, and sometimes re-sewed things like dresses and hats.

The doctor still gets money if the patient dies, and they uses leeches to get all the diseases out of the patient.

What I learned about trades is that there are more than 26 colonial trades.

I learned a lot about all the trades. I have lots of facts on all of them. Mrs. Burke put up a site that so we can look at some of the trades so that we can choose what we want to be for the thing that we are doing.

I learned about a lot of different trades. My favorite trade is the schoolmaster.
A schoolmaster is a teacher. I love Social Studies this year.
