Welcome to the New World and Using Calculators in Math?

Welcome to the New World!
In social studies, students are continuing to learn about colonization.  They are grouped into colonies and have been sailing to the New World.  It took some colonies longer to get there due to bad weather and/or no wind.  However, last week all of the colonies found land and have secured one piece of land for their colony in their new country.  The map below shows flags where each colony claimed land.  Have your child show you where their colony is living. Over the next couple of weeks they will have opportunities to claim more land, however, they will need to figure out if they have encountered friendly Native Americans or hostile Native Americans.  Also, they will need to continue to work together to help their colony survive in the New World.

Calculators in Math?
It's very rare that I let students use calculators in math.  However, this past week I taught them a game called Beat the Calculator.  One student in the group solved an equation where fractions with unlike denominators were added together using a calculator while the other students in the group had to solve the same equation using a pencil and paper. It was interesting to observe how quickly some students were able to solve some of the equations faster than their classmate who was using the calculator!  As we transition from fractions to decimals in our math unit, using the calculator has been a nice way to show students how decimals and fractions are related.
